SUCCESS: Megan Costello, second from left, and the Harriers relay team

MEGAN COSTELLO is still carrying a slight injury but that has not stopped her from enhancing her rising reputation with a starring performance for Gateshead Harriers.

The Dyke House College student, enrolled on the College’s Elite Development Squad, recorded two personal bests in Manchester competing in the second match of the Youth Development League.

Even though she is receiving treatment for a problem to her right leg, she felt good in the 100m and ran a new PB of 12.49secs and into a head wind.

That was enough to achieve an English Schools’ qualifying time, so she can relax and enjoy the remaining races of the season.

The best was still to come.

Megan ran a strong bend in the 200m and looked comfortable coming down the home straight.

She crossed the line and the trackside clock read 25.24secs (previous PB was 26.03secs). Then drama, the timekeepers informed her that the clock was not correct and she had gone even faster … in 25.19 secs.

Unfortunately the 2.2m/s tailwind (only 0.2 m/s above the legal limit) dampened things slightly but it was still an amazing performance – and was still recorded as an ESAA qualifying time.

Megan - who will be part of the Dyke House team in the Cleveland Schools' trials - was then part of the girls relay team which recorded a time of 2:52.77; less than a second away from the club record and potentially puts them No 2 in the UK for this event.
