SUCCESS: Taylor Allen, Emily Parrott, Megan Costello and Alex Lamb (back row), along with Harry Berry and Jack Griggs are on the county team

SIX Dyke House College athletes have been praised for all of their hard work after securing a place on the Cleveland Schools’ Athletics team.

Megan Costello, Taylor Allen, Jack Griggs, Alex Lamb, Harry Berry and Emily Parrott will all head to Hexham’s Meadowbank Sports Centre this Saturday.

The performance of Megan was particularly impressive because it helped her climb to joint 19th in the UK's Under-15s rankings.

All six athletes will compete in an Inter County match with Durham, Northumberland and Cumbria and it will be the first time in a number of years Dyke House have had such a healthy representation at county level.

Danny Evans, the director of the Elite Development Squad scholarship programme at the college, said: “We are all very proud. It is the most students we have had in recent years to have qualified at this stage of the county athletics season.

“It’s testament to the hard work they have put in with the specialist athletics coaching we have put on for them at Middlesbrough Sports Village, their strength and conditioning sessions and how hard they work outside of school for their own athletics clubs. It’s all come together and fantastic to see.”

Dyke House’s strength and conditioning coach Shane Hassall and Andy Woodward, a UK Athletics Level 3 Performance Coach, have worked incredibly hard to assist with the development of the athletes at Dyke House.

Woodward is also a lead coach for speed with Darlington Harriers and has 25 years of coaching across a number of sports – and his work along with Shane is clearly benefiting Dyke House’s students.

Five of the qualifiers for this Saturday’s action at Hexham achieved personal bests to reach the team.

Year 8’s Jack Griggs won the high jump with his high leap of 1m 60cm to reach the next stage, while Emily Parrott finished second in the long jump with a PB of 4.25m.

Megan Costello (Year 9) will compete in the 100m and 200m after hitting an English Schools qualifying time of 12.6 in the 100m and 26.8 in the 200m.

Harry Berry, also of Year 9, qualified in second place in the 200m with his time of 24.4.

In year 10 there was an impressive 9m jump from Alex Lamb in the triple jump and Taylor Allen (Year 11) progressed with a shot putt throw she was not even satisfied with which bodes well going forward.

All six athletes will head to Hexham for the first in the Inter Counties and hope to impress enough to make English Schools’ selectors take notice.
