INSTEAD of putting his feet up during the summer break from school, Cole Baldam was constantly competing in his bid to hit new heights.

The Dyke House College student travelled all over the place to gain greater competitive experience and he delivered some impressive results.

Cole, now old enough to compete in senior events, raced against around 350 triathletes at the Castle Howard Triathlon.

He was one of the two youngest in this Super Sprint Distance, involving a 400m lake swim a 300m uphill to bike transition then a 24km hilly bike ride before a 4km run around the grounds.

He crossed the line in torrential rain and was happy to have finished 22nd from the full field in 1hr 18min.

The following day he competed in the Yorkshire Biathle where he claimed silver in the Run-Swim-Run event (1200m Run /200m Swim /1200m Run).

He went on to compete in two regional midweek triathlons at Ellerton (Richmond) and competed in the UK Team relay championships at the National Water Sports Centre (Nottingham) with 206 teams starting in the water.

Cole was not fazed and delivered the fastest team splits for the three disciplines. The team eventually finishing 153rd from 206 teams.

Following a number of intensive mid-week run sessions with Burn Road Harriers, Cole went onto deliver an official 53 seconds personal best for the 5k park run in 19.03min.

He then travelled to both Salford & Ormskirk for qualifying for the National Biathle race series.

Cole added additional valuable points to his to his overall ranking. His best four race-result points from the six qualifying competitions  narrowly earned him the Under-15 National Series by a single point ahead of his closest rival for the national title.

Cole, now in Year 11 at Dyke House, is looking forward to the end of the season where he will be able to compete in the Hartlepool Big Lime Triathlon for the first time on  October 1 and  then the Northern Schools Biathlon Championships at Hexham the following weekend.

He wants qualification for the National finals in Birmingham and hopes he will be joined by other  Junior triathletes from the town from the  recently formed Hartlepool Triathletes Junior section.
