HARVEY KERRIDGE’S preparations for the European Championships later this year continue to go well after landing a prestigious double.

The Dyke House Sports & Technology College student followed up winning the Kerridge Award at Hartlepool Wadokai’s annual presentation night by claiming gold in Dublin.

The Elite Development Squad scholar, who was handed the club trophy for being a nice guy as well as a fine karate performer, travelled over to Ireland to compete in the Sakagami International Championship.

He was there with three of his Hartlepool Wadokai team-mates, Mollie Cooper, Joe Hind and Daniel Spires. He took part in a course as well as a competition.

Harvey claimed gold in the male cadet (14-15 years) kata, with his Hartlepool Wadokai team-mates getting silver and bronze.

He took silver in the male cadet over 65kg category and then went on to win gold in the Open weight male cadet category too.

The final was a tough fight and the England coach praised Harvey for his positive attitude and control when faced with a fighter with excessive contact.

The Hartlepool Wadokai squad won ten medals from four competitors so it was an excellent outing.

Harvey continues to train at his club most nights, plus weekends at Gateshead, and monthly at Walsall with Wadokai England in preparation for the European championships in Sardinia later in the year.
