DYKE House College students achieved medals and top performances when they represented Cleveland Schools’ at Gateshead last weekend.

Jack Griggs, Megan Costello, Jayden Bates, Thomas Lea and Emily Parrott all qualified from the district trials a week earlier to appear in county vests in an Inter County match against Durham, Cumberland and Northumbria.

There was a bit of drama where Griggs, pictured above, was concerned, even though he still managed to win the high jump.

Records still state that he only jumped 1.69m when the Year 9 athlete actually believes he managed 1.72m, which could prove crucial in his rankings as he waits to hear if he has received a call for the nationals.

English Schools’ officials are still looking into it but either way Griggs, who has the backing of the Cleveland coach who witnessed the jump, managed to claim gold by beating his 1.58m height in qualifying.

Bates, pictured, managed to secure second spot in the shot put with a throw of 11.30m, while he was also seventh in hurdles.

There was more glory for Dyke House’s extremely talented sprinter Megan Costello.

She has made her mark on the national stage and crossed the line in the 200m in a time of 25.99sec, and she was also second in the 100m in 12.69sec.

It was another fantastic day for Dyke House to have such strong representation in the Cleveland squad.
