DYKE House Academy’s Alex Hutchinson is set to sign a two-year scholarship deal with Middlesbrough Football Club.

The Year 10 student has impressed his coaches at the Championship club and has been rewarded with a contract for when he leaves school.

Hutchinson is due to sign his new terms next week and he is understandably delighted to have taken another step towards fulfilling his childhood dream.

“When I leave Dyke House it means I have a two years scholarship, so I will be at the academy every day at the Rockliffe Park training ground,” he said.

“I have been scoring for the year above, the Under-16s, this season and everything has been going well. I’m really pleased.

“This is my seventh year at Middlesbrough because I was picked up by them when I played in a cup final at Rockliffe for Greatham, scoring a hat-trick.”

Hutchinson, a target-man who has helped Dyke House to the Town Cup success for the last four years, will never forget when he found out he was being kept on at Middlesbrough.

He said: “I was in the gym after training and my coach came in. I had felt like I was playing well and he said that they felt it was time to offer me a scholarship. I didn’t believe him at first.

“The season has just finished. I was shocked when he said. He started to explain how I had played well and deserved it.”

But Hutchinson – who wants to make sure that he passes his GCSEs at Dyke House before starting his scholarship - will not be taking anything for granted.

He said: “At the start of the season I had growing pains and it was hard for me. I kept going and I don’t want to stop now.

“I want to get a pro contract after these two years. I will keep working hard and keep scoring.

“I have followed Harry Chapman’s career, I look up to him and how he went from my primary at Golden Flatts to Dyke House and then on to Middlesbrough. He is now a pro and I want to follow that lead.”
